Behchoko November 2019: Audrey-Ann

An author’s note

The events leading up to this trip for me, consisted of debating whether I should embark on this journey or not. I’m so glad that I did. The kids are getting the message. That they are loved by god and they are loved by us with him behind . I wrote this poem on the way up. We were about half an hour away from Behchoko and I was thinking about the progress we made previously, while looking out the window at the sunset and the bison. I hope that you enjoy and that it paints you a picture of the joy we experience on these missions’ trips.

It’s a Warm Place

By Audrey-Ann Stephenson

An auburn and early sunset behind sleeping trees

crusted with ice surround a place,

Full of life

With beautiful young people trying to survive

Themselves,

And the world outside.

There is hope in our hearts for change and love

so neither us nor them will ever give up.

God’s words spoken in cold smoke-looking clouds

circle surprised heads, hopeful

to make connections and brand new friends.

Even though the temperature is low

their bright smiles still melt the snow in Behchoko.
